Piercing guns that are typically used in little accessory stores or even Walmart are hated for much more than their painful, imprecise methods of body modification.
Piercing guns are also absurdly dirty! Every time they are used they produce a very, tiny, fine micro spray of blood and body fluids as they pierce the skin. This spray gets on the gun, so that even though the actual part that is put in with the ring is clean and sterile-- the gun that makes it work is covered in TONS of people's body fluids!! and the so-called "piercer" has been touching the gun as she puts the sterile piercing pieces in place, contaminating them anyway, most likely.
This whole ordeal leads to tons of possibilities for piercing infections. This stuff can get REALLY gross if it gets infected. Huge balls of puss inside someone's earlobe is nothing something anybody wants to experience or deal with, I can tell you that much!
It's SO much safer to use a real body piercing studio with sterile hollow needles. Trust me. It's WORTH IT!
If you go to get your ears pierced, and some lady pulls out something that looks like this, RUN. This is a piercing gun. Very unclean, full of bacteria.

Type of modern piercings.
There are tons of different kinds of piercing these days. The most common has got to be the typical ear piercings. However, did you know that there are anther multitude of ways to pierce the human ear?
Below is an image showing the different ear piercing locations and names:
Of course, some of these locations and MUCH more prone to infection and rejection of the piercing.
Another thing I want to discuss is that unlike in malls, an actual piercing parlor will almost ALWAYS use a hollow needle to preform your piercing. This is because using a piercing gun simply splits open the flesh and forces the ring in. This results in more pain involved in the healing process. However, when you use a hollow needle, the needle actually removes the flesh that would be in the way of the ring. While this method of piercing might cause a little bit more blood shed, the skin will heal and form a new outer layer around the ring. This way of piercing is much more painless in the long run, and is how these things are done best.

Body Piercings!
One of the most universal forms of body modification is piercing! Most women in modern cultures have at least their ears pierced. But as times are changing, more and more piercings are becoming common place and accepted, even in formal work environments.
One of the things piercing loves have to deal with is society accepting their piercings. This is especially true when the piercings are in visible areas, such as the face. Many old fashioned employers do not want to hire people who have a multitude of piercings on their face. However, more and more companies are accepting the fact that this is a form of personal expression, and allowing their employees to wear their piercings in the work place.
But aside from talking about modern culture, piercings have been a major part of ethnic cultures for thousands of years! These are usually to mark tribes or as rites of passage.
